University of Akron (UA) is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Statistics (www.uakron.edu/statistics) starting from August 2024. UA is a well-known urban research university located in northeast Ohio.
The department seeks to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars whose work touches on the pressing needs of cities and urban communities. As a part of this group, the successful candidate for this tenure-track position will support the department’s core mission of teaching our own undergraduate and graduate students as well as service teaching for other departments and colleges. We seek candidates who are committed to increasing the range of perspectives in the sciences and supporting our unique student body. Candidates who share UA’s vision (as the university’s strategic plan states, “we promise to increase our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,”) are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree in statistics, applied statistics or biostatistics. They must have demonstrated teaching potential and show evidence of interest in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels. They must also show potential for research productivity that can be disseminated in quality peer-reviewed journals.
The ideal candidate should have collaborative research experience and evidence of potential for external funding. They should also have adequate computer programming skills and statistical computing knowledge for modern-day statistical needs. It is highly desirable that the candidate has some teaching experience after finishing their terminal degree, as well as the capability of and interest in carrying forward the activities of the department’s Center for Statistical Consulting. The candidate’s research area should complement the department’s existing areas of expertise in time series, spatial/spatio-temporal data, functional data, bioinformatics and sequential/multistage designs for statistical inference.
The department offers bachelor’s programs in Statistics, Data Science, and Actuarial Science, along with a comprehensive Master of Science degree in Statistics.
