The National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Division of HIV Prevention (DHP), Quantitative Sciences Branch (QSB) is seeking highly motivated candidates for the position of Mathematical Statistician on the Statistical Science Team, with primary responsibilities related to providing statistical and data science expertise for HIV prevention activities.
This opportunity is open to both internal and external applicants. While the organization is located in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the position may be eligible for both remote and telework workplace flexibility options.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a program technical expert applying methods and selecting statistical techniques to conduct methodological research to improve and implement sample surveys or experimental study designs; to conduct evaluations of data collection, reduction, processing, and analysis methodologies.
- Use standard and/or advanced statistical tools and methods to analyze program specific related data.
- Apply mathematical and statistical techniques and perform computerized analyses (using existing statistical software such as SUDAAN, SAS or R) to determine the adequacy of collected public health data needed to resolve scientific problems and modify existing techniques and practices to the applicable program or scientific study.
- Conduct analyses and evaluations to answer important public health questions and determine the suitability and adequacy of data collected, and adapt statistical procedures independently as needed.
- Develop complex study designs and analysis plans to improve public health outcomes.
- Perform evaluation of statistical methodology used in specified health program studies to ensure the results are valid and reliable.
- Advise concerning statistical matters and administer or perform professional work requiring the design, development, utilization, and adaptation of mathematical methods and techniques to statistical processes, or research in the basic theories and science of statistics, where such research will advance the specialty public health program research methods.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication or other technical reports in collaboration with scientists and other public health professionals, for non-statistical audiences as well as statisticians, detailing the statistical methodology that was applied and the resulting conclusions.
Required Qualifications:
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph:
Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, which must include: performing data analysis using advanced statistical techniques, preparing written reports or manuscripts detailing the results of statistical analyses, and collaborating or consulting on the application of statistical methods relevant to public health research.
