Evaluating artificial intelligence applications in medical devices: Multiple research training fellowships in regulatory science at FDA/OSEL/CDRH

Description. Fellows will participate in research led by prominent OSEL scientists to develop regulatory science tools (https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/science-and-research-medical-devices/catalog-regulatory-science-tools-help-assess-new-medical-devices) Areas of interest include the following: Whole-slide image quality evaluation | Synthetic imaging data for training and testing algorithms | Evaluation of AI-enabled devices for image segmentation, multimodal ML, and multi-class classification | Bias, reproducibility, robustness, and generalizability of AI techniques| Assessment of multimodal biomarkers and uncertainty quantification for adaptive trials | Large language model (language and vision) assessment.

Position Multi-year training fellowships for US citizens, residents and eligible foreign nationals.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the regulatory, public health and consumer protection agency responsible for ensuring all human and animal drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, foods, food additives, drugs and medicated feeds for food producing animals, tobacco and radiation emitting devices are safe and effective. The mission of the Center for Radiological Health (CDRH)is to protect and promote public health by ensuring safety and effectiveness of medical devices. The Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL)is dedicated to promoting innovation for the development of lifesaving medical devices.

Position requirements. A graduate degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or similar, and an eagerness to solve technical challenges systematically with experimental and computational approaches. Candidates must meet security requirements including a background check and a minimum of 3 out of the last 5 years in US residency status.
