NASA Postdoctoral Research Opportunity in Uncertainty Quantification

AMA is seeking a research engineer to support NASA Langley Research Center. The position is suitable for post-doctoral applicants with specialized training and skills for the application of Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) and Machine Learning techniques.

The position will be contracted through Analytical Mechanics Associates (AMA). The statement of work focuses on (i) the application of state-of-the-art UQ and machine learning methods to two engineering/science problems of interest to NASA and (ii) the development and organization of a UQ community of practice at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). For the research component, one project will involve probabilistic prediction of microweather at urban landing pads in support of NASA’s urban air mobility effort. This work is expected to require knowledge and expertise in deep learning, generative modeling, and uncertainty quantification. There will be a second project, but the topic and scope are flexible, and we are happy to take the candidate’s interests into account prior to final selection. Potential topics range from failure of engineering materials to climate science. For the community building effort, the candidate will help our research group organize seminars and meetings, build relationships with UQ experts in academia and industry, and perform outreach at NASA. We believe this effort will be a great opportunity for networking across NASA and the broader UQ field as a whole. The position will be in-person and last for 1-3 years, pending performance of the contractor and availability of funding.
