The Hampton University School of Science, Department of Mathematics invites nominations and applications for full-time faculty positions. Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically Black university located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton, Virginia. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution of higher learning with approval by the Commission on Colleges Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and the Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics. The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to teach, challenge, and encourage our students to think both deeply and broadly; To enable our students to develop a mastery of reasoning and analytic processes, problem-solving, critical thinking and become life-long learners; To prepare our majors for a career in private industry, government industry, and graduate studies; To provide our majors with opportunities for advanced study and research in mathematics and related fields, and applications of mathematical methods to real-world problems; To prepare secondary school teachers with a strong mathematics foundation and a mastery of effective teaching strategies; To create an environment for our faculty to grow, deliver state-of-the-art instruction, and conduct world-class research.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include teaching, research, external funding, publications, creative and scholarly activities, and community service. Faculty will be expected to teach lecture and research courses as assigned. Additionally, faculty must prepare and maintain current course syllabi and outlines; develop course expectations; sustain expertise in specialty areas in teaching, research, and professional development; advise and register assigned students; participate in recruitment and retention activities; and keep accurate academic/student records. Faculty members must conduct and utilize research to integrate and discover knowledge. They are also expected to represent the University, the School of Science, and the Department of Mathematics when participating in professional organizations, meetings, conferences, and community activities. The annual contract covers nine months, with the summer months off for professional or personal development.
Requirements and Qualifications
The successful candidates will hold an earned doctoral degree in mathematics, statistics, or
related fields at the time of the appointment. In addition, the successful candidates will also
engage undergraduate and graduate students, building an exemplary research and
publication program. The candidates prepared to engage in cross-disciplinary research and
